Talk between 1st and 2nd half

The truth has to be told. No matter what happened in first half you do not have so much time. Something around 6-7 minutes is often not enough. In this article I will give my advises to use the time in efficient way.

Firstly, you came to the room with extremely tired people. Let them drink and rest for a while. It is a great moment to see if they have some observations. Be sure that very often they will start to discuss with each other, sometimes they will be mad or have pretension to each other. If it is not out of control it is good to let them talk to clear all misunderstandings. What is also important you buy some time to think and create a plan of your talk (you have some time walking to the dressing room, you should have some plan right? :)).

Pre game talk in handball

In this article I will share my point of view on pre game talk. Please be aware that it base on my observations and experience. Other coaches could have arguments to make it differently, especially on top level.

When?

In my opinion the best is to make that directly before warm up. The players should be ready to get the court. It means every 'pre warm up’ activities like taping, messages should be done before pre game talk. All phones hidden and muted. I prefer not to make another block of time between pre game talk and warm up because I feel that that break calms down our player while we want them to be motivated after the pre game talk. Some coaches prefer to go to dressing room after warm up to make motivational talk, however it is risky to make that habit because sometimes logistics will not let you do it.

Strategy or Tactics? Is that the same?

When I start cooperation with the Team I think about how I want my team to play. Which 'style’ fits best to players I gave in my Team? Maybe most of them grew in any 'handball school’ and the best and most efficient way is to continue this work? All that considerations leads us to teach our players what will be the 'core’ of our game. Skills and behavior that needs to be trained for months will build our strategy. For example all 'spanish style’ teams have to have a players who perfectly attack the free space while in 'scandinavian style’ teams more important is how we play 1 vs 1 with the player on a small space. And we build the strategy around that. And the same think is about defense. Not only about which system we choose but what is more important: how we manage common situation during the game like 2 vs 2, pressing rules etc. For example: we want to circulate the pivot from front having in mind that behind us is the weak point or we want to defend pivot from one side having in mind that other pivot side is our weak point. And for our strategy we build the training plan – we try to learn how to defend our weak points and perfect the strong side of our strategy. There are no ideal strategy. Every game system, every game decision and game sector have weak points. The think is to know them and train how not to lose because of them.
